A Perfect Children’s Day Gift
What would the Perfect Children’s Day Gift be for Timisire? In 2016, about 7 years after we got married, my wife had a literally bouncing baby girl; she was huge! Red and squalling, she came out poised to reign and quickly became the centre of our attention. You see, we had suffered several miscarriages before and the pregnancy that became this daughter was an emotionally wringing journey for us. We chose to call our miracle child Oluwatimisire, a Yoruba name that literally means “God has pushed me to goodness”. That was 2 years ago; I am now a doting father who takes every opportunity to make a fuss over my child and shower her with gifts. I simply cannot keep calm.
On my way out this morning, I went into the guest bedroom to say goodbye to my baby. My wife’s mother is visiting us for the week and the little girl was getting enough cuddling to keep her glued to the woman’s side. I stood unnoticed at the door and watched for a few seconds as my 2 years old touched her grandmother’s face and chest with her tiny hands. I looked at the bundle of joy God has blessed me with and my heart was filled afresh with warmth. She was doing the doctor routine she first started last month. She wore bread nylon on her right hand like a glove as she examined her ‘patient’. I really can’t place where she picked up this routine from, but we have already started calling her Dr. Timisire. As I bent to kiss this child that has filled my life with so much laughter and frequent yells of “baby stop”, I decided that she deserved something lasting.
While at work, I thought extensively about what precious thing I could buy Dr Timisire for children’s day. I browsed the internet and asked my colleagues for ideas but nothing made a significant impression on me. Then, just before I got up to go for lunch, my older sister called me. We exchanged pleasantries and she went straight to the point. Children’s day for this year falls on a Sunday and she was inviting Timisire for a special service at her church after which she and her cousins would hang out at an amusement park. I promised to get back to her after I must have discussed it with my wife.
Then I asked, “What is the most precious gift you remember our parents ever giving us?”
“Education,” Mama, as we fondly called my sister, did not hesitate before giving her response.
She was right. Education! With it came the freedom of thought and courage of choice that has lifted my family out of the squalor we were born into. While growing up, our parents were so poor that they had to, in addition to working like slaves, sacrifice their pride as they borrowed from pillar to post to put us through school. We spent a few minutes reminiscing about the past and giving thanks for how far we’ve come.
“However, your case is different and you won’t have to grind so hard to give your children quality education.” She sounded so confident that I became curious.
That was when she gave me the gist of the Leadway Education Target Plan she and her husband took up for their kids.
She told me that the insurance cover would help me save towards my children’s education, with the added advantage of providing a lump sum payment to secure their future if the worst should happen to me. Mama explained that once I decided on a target sum, my premiums would be calculated based on that, and would be spread over a minimum length of 3 years, depending on my preference.
“My dear, this is the most flexible insurance plan I’ve seen around,” she continued, “no pressure, you can pay your premiums as frequently as you prefer: monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, annually or one-off.”
The accountant that I am, I got hooked when she mentioned that the premiums I pay into the plan qualify for tax relief.
“Hello… hello… he…” my sister’s voice filtered into my consciousness as I drifted off on the wings of my dreams for Timisire. Finally, I have found the perfect Children’s Day gift for my little girl.
