As 2016 seems set to be a season of fire outbreaks, are you covered?
According to the ‘World Life Expectancy’ report, Nigeria currently ranks number one globally for deaths by fire.
In 2015, Lagos State recorded 1,898 fire incidences in which 80 people perished, according to BusinessDay report on December 30th, 2015.
Fire disasters are not limited to Lagos State alone. Places like Sapele, Kaduna, Benin, Kano, Sokoto, Minna, Yola, Nasarawa, Ibadan, Ado-Ekiti and Onitsha, have also experienced great losses from fire.
According to the Red Cross, once a fire has started, you have only two minutes to make your escape. This statistic is the more shocking, given that many fires start overnight when members of the household are sound asleep, with 60 per cent of these deaths occurring in houses without smoke alarms.
In other words, installing smoke alarms, and testing them regularly to ensure that they are in good working order, usually makes the difference between life and death.
To be protected from fire, one might need to install an effective smoke alarm in the house or office and create a comprehensive floor plan with at least two escape routes, in every room.
Also, fuel for generators and gas cylinders should be placed out of harm’s way.
Fire-fighting equipment such as fire extinguishers and fire blankets must be kept within easy reach.
Having survived the fire, what’s next?
